Netflix posted their quarterly earnings on Wednesday, and two of Apple’s products figured heavily in the company’s streaming business -- with the second-generation Apple TV actually surpassing the iPad in terms of streaming content viewed.
MacRumors is reporting that the second-generation Apple TV released in late September is already one of the more popular devices for Netflix customers to stream content to -- even surpassing the more mobile experience of the iPad, according to BusinessInsider.
“The devices with large installed bases -- meaning Windows and Mac laptops, Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo Wii -- are the most popular devices for watching instantly from Netflix,” the Netflix quarterly report revealed. “AppleTV has done very well for us, and in just four months has passed the also-growing iPad in Netflix viewing hours.”
While a device exclusively dedicated to the living room is more likely to be used for watching video content than the iPad, the Netflix announcement still comes as a surprise considering that Apple has sold far more iPads than they have Apple TV units.
“Apple’s most recent earnings release revealed that the company has sold nearly 15 million iPads, while the Apple TV only reached the one-million mark at the close of the year,” MacRumors notes. “While not all of the sales of either device have occurred in markets where Netflix offers streaming content, iPads still likely outnumber Apple TVs by at least an order of magnitude in Netflix's markets.”
