It’s been quite a year for Apple so far, but now that the dust has settled on the iPad and is starting to do the same on the iPhone 4, the rumors turn to September and what may come with the next generation of the iPod touch.
9to5Mac is reporting that “a leading U.K. retailer” has revealed some details on what we might expect from the 2010 model of iPod touch, which should be unveiled in September at Apple’s now annual music-themed event. Taking a cue from the iPhone 4, support for iOS 4 would seem to be a lock along with “the same movement sensors as the iPhone 4,” the retailer ponders.
That means the addition of a gyroscope, which would seem to be a natural fit for gaming on the iPod touch. 9to5 Mac also feels that the next iPod touch will be powered by some form of Apple’s A4 processor, which is already providing the muscle for the iPad and iPhone 4.
The most exciting iPod touch rumor claims that the next-gen device will feature a five-megapixel camera for 720p HD video recording, an LED flash and a front-facing camera, as well as being equipped for FaceTime video chat via Wi-Fi. If that all sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the same stuff packed into this year’s iPhone 4. U.K. retailer John Lewis claims these goodies are on the way based upon “noises we’re hearing from suppliers,” which may or may not be a good indicator.
Finally, 9to5Mac speculates on the inclusion of 3G data, mostly based on the existing rumors that iTunes will go cloud-based at some point in the future. But, just as quickly, they surmise that may be one step too far -- after all, the only thing really separating a 3G-equipped iPod touch from an iPhone at that point is the ability to make cellular calls, and let’s face it, that’s not historically one of the iPhone’s strongest traits.
At any rate, summer is far from over yet, so we’ll all keep an eye on the post-Labor Day rumors for Apple’s next music event.
