Nielsen: Over 40 percent of Tablet Owners Using Device as Second Screen

If you watch a lot of TV, you're well aware of television networks pushing apps to further complement the viewing of programming. Whether it's a companion app for Discovery Channel, or just an ESPN SportsCenter app to check scores during the game, providers are paying more attention to the prevalence of tablets in American homes.
According to a new report from Nielsen, not only are tablets becoming more commonplace across all age groups, but use of the devices while watching TV is quite regular.
While the study places smartphone usage at over 50 percent in the United States, tablets like the iPad have also increased steadily. Nielsen's Cross Platform Report states "almost one-fifth" of American households now own a tablet.
But perhaps more interesting, is the amount of users watching the tablet while simultaneously enjoying a show on the tube. The study shows over 40 percent of tablet owners use their device while watching television, "once a day." Over 25 percent of tablet owners use a tablet while watching TV, "several times a day."

Interesting figures, and certainly appealing to networks. Second-screen apps offer an opportunity to not only draw the viewer closer to programming, but can potentially work as a second source of ad revenue.
And according to Nielsen, the tablet usage seems to defy traditional age demographic gaps.
"Thirty-six percent of people age 35-54 years old and 44 percent of people 55-64 years old use their tablets while watching TV in order to dive deeper into programming," reads the Nielsen report. "Nearly a third of tablet users age 25-64 check sports scores while watching games too. In fact, a majority of owners use apps while watching TV across the board."
So, what's the takeaway? If your favorite television show or sports network doesn't already offer a second-screen app for your iPad, it's a safe bet it won't stay that way for long.
