Watch out, Google Maps: Nokia has put you on notice by rebranding its own mapping effort as HERE, and may even beat the search giant to the punch by bringing a feature-rich maps app to iOS soon.
The Conversations by Nokia blog announced Tuesday that its newly rebranded mapping platform, HERE, will soon be making its debut on iOS and Android, going head-to-head with Google Maps and Apple's own currently flailing solution.
"We’re making HERE Maps available in the Apple App Store: iOS users can more easily access our rich mapping experience with a single tap on their home screen," the blog noted. "The app has been developed with the same HTML5 technology that powers the mobile web and is therefore very versatile and optimized for mobile use.
"With HERE Maps for iOS you can get smart directions to navigate your way around town, whether you’re driving, walking or taking public transportation."
HERE Maps allows users to save a coverage area to their device for offline use in four different zoom levels, offering dedicated, voice-guided, turn-by-turn walking navigation for pedestrian routes, parks, alleyways and more.
Urban dwellers dissatisfied with Apple's new iOS 6 Maps will be happy to know that Nokia has got your back with HERE Maps, complete with public transportation and driving directions in over 500 cities.
HERE Maps will work equally well on the iPad as well as the iPhone and iPod touch, but Nokia isn't saying exactly when the app might hit the App Store — although the company seems to believe it will beat a dedicated Google Maps app to the punch before the end of the year.
