Not Much Longer Now -- MMS Friday
Posted 09/23/2009 at 10:29:30pm | by J Keirn-Swanson

Even though some people have already had their MMS capabilities activated by AT&T, leading to speculation the carrier would slow-roll out the feature to avoid network strain, the Friday, September 25th date is holding firm.

In order to prepare users who may have been living under a rock, AT&T has been sending out free text messages reading 'Picture & video messaging (MMS) will be available for iPhone on 9/25. While we prepare your account for MMS capability, the current "view my message" experience will be turned off but your ability to send and receive text messages will not be affected.'

For those of you who missed your chance to pick up your message at www.viewmymessages.com, that service has been disabled. Whether or not existing MMS messages will be retrievable after Friday's activation date is still unclear.

While users were understandably impatient, Apple's release of the 3.0 OS brought with it several app tweaks that have paved the way for MMS. The final switch, though, still had to be thrown at the carrier end. Many users, eager to have the feature and alerted to a workaround, used a carrier file update that proved to suffer its own host of troubles.

While Apple's European iPhone partners have had MMS for some time, in two days their American counterparts will join them.

avatarApparently

Apparently viewmymessages.com has been down longer than that. I found out recently that friends had be sending me picture messages for the past 2 months and I didn't even receive the standard "go to" message.

I just hope that this activation process on Friday doesn't cripple my phone.

avatarI already have MMS.

Tried last night, hoping for no more exclamation points. My first message was sent! Then I thought about how pathetic it was that I was so excited for a service everyone without an iPhone has had for years!
