Amidst rumors that Apple was working closely with Nuance Communications to bring voice command integration into iOS 5, the creator of popular free apps such as Dragon Dictation has quietly slipped the technology into the App Store instead, in the form of a new free Dragon Go! app.
Nuance Communications has released a new app called Dragon Go!, specializing in voice command technology similar to what many expect Apple to license from the firm for a future iOS update. While that may yet come to pass, in the meantime we have the technology today in the form of a new iPhone app that seems to get the job done quite nicely -- and even integrates with other iOS apps as well.
“Control your personal universe with no boundaries -- all with the power of your voice!” the app description begins. “With Nuance Dragon Go! all you have to do is say what you want and Dragon Go! will deliver your results within seconds.
“So smart, Dragon Go! knows what you want simply by how you say it!” the description continues. “And it will deliver you directly to the best mobile sites offering what you want -- such as Fandango for movie showtimes and trailers, Accuweather.com for local weather updates, Pandora® internet radio, Yelp for local reviews, recommendations and more!”
While it’s not quite as cool as being deeply integrated into iOS, the new Dragon Go! app is still quite nifty, complete with a “Dragon Carousel” to get search results from various sources around the internet. Speaking of which, you’ll need some kind of internet connection to use Dragon Go! -- Wi-Fi, 3G or EDGE will do.
Dragon Go! is a free download now available in the App Store, compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, third and forth-generation iPod touch and iPad (although it’s not a universal app) running iOS 4.0 or later.
