Well, it may not be the Firefly series revival that many of us have been hoping for, but it looks as though fans of the cult sci-fi TV adventure will be able to scratch their 10-year itch with a Firefly-themed iOS app scheduled for a Summer 2014 release. According to the teaser trailer (viewable below), it will be called Firefly Online.
According to Polygon, the officially licensed app will allow you to recruit your own crew and partake in missions, all while trading items with other players. Unfortunately, that sounds little different than what you can find in the morass of subpar social RPGs already saturating both iOS and Facebook. On the plus side, you'll be able to customize your ships, and you'll be able play with your friends regardless of whether they're on iOS or Android.
Regrettably, that's about all we know about the game at the moment, aside from a teaser trailer that flashes unhelpful info in all-caps Papyrus (already a bad sign) and some quotes from the developers. "It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible," said Andy Gore, CEO of QMXi and Quantum Mechanix Inc. "The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures — well, that's just too shiny for words."
If you want updates on the game's development, feel free to sign up at Firefly Online's official site. Here's to hoping they don't shut down the servers unexpectedly three months after launch.
