Hard to believe that the month of December is nearly half over already, with less than two weeks until the Christmas holiday! Things have certainly been quite busy in the tech world, with plenty of new or updated apps released and a plethora of services also getting new features this week. And what's this about a new untethered jailbreak? Read on to find out more...
Find My iPhone Can Now Drive You to a Lost Device
Apple pushed out a minor version 2.0.1 update to Find My iPhone on Tuesday, but it's kind of a big one for anyone who's lost their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Using iOS 6 or later, the app now offers driving directions to the location where your device was found -- which could be quite interesting (and potentially dangerous) in the event of a theft. The app also updates the Play Sound, Lost Mode and Erase buttons, which now appear separately from the map view, presumably to avoid accidentally tapping any of them.
Untethered iOS 6 Jailbreak Coming December 22?
After a long time without a new untethered jailbreak, it seemed to many that the cat and mouse game with Apple was finally over and the hackers had lost. On Tuesday, seemingly out of nowhere, a ray of hope arrived, promising the first untethered jailbreak capable of cracking open all supported iOS 6.0.1 devices -- including the latest iPhone 5, fourth-gen iPad and iPad mini models. Sound too good to be true? We'll have to wait 10 more days to find out, with the jailbreak exclusively available on December 22 for Mac and Windows. The mysterious hacker behind the project -- who appears to be unaffiliated with any of the go-to names we're familiar with -- is promising video proof of his jailbreakery will be posted today, so it's probably worth a peek to see if and when that promise gets fulfilled.
Twitter Profiles Rolling Out Today
Microblogging service Twitter isn't content with simply going toe-to-toe with Instagram this week -- they've also announced that profiles are rolling out to all twitter.com users automatically on this fine Wednesday. "If you don’t upload a header photo by then, you (and everyone else) will only see a default grey image on your page," the blog post on Monday announced. Twitter has even produced a short video to show off the advantages of having a profile, header and background photo, so jump over to the blog and see what you're missing out on.
FileMaker Go Mobile Downloads Pass 500,000
FileMaker, Inc. is celebrating something of a milestone this week, announcing that the company's FileMaker Go for iPad and FileMaker Go for iPhone apps have surpassed 500,000 downloads from the App Store. Of course, it certainly doesn't hurt that the apps are now free as of the latest version 12, versus the previous version, still available for $39.99 (iPad) or $19.99 (iPhone), respectively. In any event, it's good news all around for FileMaker and kudos on their milestone.
Yahoo! Introduces New Mail Apps
Yahoo! CEO Marissa Meyer has announced the debut of an improved Yahoo! Mail, now available on the web, Android and for the first time, apps for both iOS and Windows 8. "You’ve told us loud and clear that you want fewer distractions when it comes to email," the blog posted noted Tuesday. "You want to quickly login, communicate, and get on with your day. And we’ve listened. Starting today, the new Yahoo! Mail is fast, easy and available anywhere you go." With its consistent look and feel across all four platforms, the new Yahoo! Mail is, as always, free for everyone and the iOS version is now available from the App Store.
