Happy iPhone 5 preorder day! If you're reading this in the afternoon, that means you probably stayed up late trying to preorder your shiny new handset right when the virtual stores opened at 12:01am PST, and we're kind of bleary-eyed from doing the same. So let's cut this short and recap what happened while you were(n't) sleeping, shall we?
Still No Simultaneous Voice & Data with Verizon or Sprint iPhone 5
The Verge is reporting that Verizon Wireless and Sprint users hoping to nab an iPhone 5 next week and have some sweet simultaneous voice and data usage are about to be very, very disappointed. According to a New York Times report, the ability to perform this trick on Verizon and Sprint's CDMA network would have required yet another antenna, and apparently Cupertino decided there simply wasn't enough room inside the handset to do so. “iPhone 5 supports simultaneous voice and data on GSM-based 3G and LTE networks," an Apple spokeswoman told the Times. "It is not yet possible to do simultaneous voice and data on networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data in a single radio design."
iOS 6-Friendly iCloud Website Now Out of Beta
Well, here's a nice surprise: 9to5Mac is reporting that Apple has taken the beta tag off its iCloud.com website once again, adding iOS 6-compatible features such as VIPs to Mail, a revamped Find My iPhone and the dedicated Notes and Reminders web apps. We were able to log into our own iCloud account and enjoy the new offerings, which come ahead of the official iOS 6 release next Wednesday, Sept. 19.
Want Current Seasons of Fox TV Shows from iTunes? Too Bad!
It can't all be about the iPhone 5, which is why The Verge is reporting that new TV shows from the Fox and FX networks appear to be MIA from the iTunes Store heading into the new season. In fact, Fox seems to have been removed entirely from the iTunes network page and both companies have remained mum on the subject to date. The creator of the Fox show Sons of Anarchy claims the move is due to Apple wanting all TV networks to remove watermarks from its content, and he tweeted to fans that their best bet for now is to head over to rival Amazon Instant Video until the "iTunes snafu" gets worked out.
Steve Wozniak on Apple Patent Win: "I Hate It"
Bloomberg is reporting that Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak appears to be no fan of his former employer's recent patent win over Samsung. “I hate it. I don’t think the decision of California will hold. And I don’t agree with it -- very small things I don’t really call that innovative,” Wozniak explained. “I wish everybody would just agree to exchange all the patents and everybody can build the best forms they want to use everybody’s technologies.” We'd have to agree with that sentiment, but it doesn't seem likely anytime soon.
Apple Says No Unlocked iPhone 5 at Launch
Last but not least before we head off to grab some shuteye after being up all night preordering our iPhone 5, The Verge is reporting that Apple will not be making unlocked handsets available at launch. That's the same scenario iPhone 4S users faced last October, with the unlocked GSM handsets -- which can only be used on AT&T or T-Mobile here in the U.S. -- finally being made available last November. An Apple Store representative claims the unlocked iPhone 5s will start flowing "sometime over the next several weeks," so you may want to explore your subsidized options if you want one right away.
