The weekend is here! Okay, so maybe you're reading this first thing in the morning so you've still got a whole Friday to get through, but you can easily kill a bit of that time by reading up on some stories you might have missed on Thursday -- including the release of Zombie Gunner, which is free for a limited time and ready to keep your fingers out of trouble this weekend.
iFixit Tears Down Fifth-Generation iPod touch
Apple started shipping the new fifth-generation iPod touch this week with little fanfare, but the folks at iFixit were ready and waiting with spudgers at the ready, all in the name of digging out its deepest, darkest secrets. So what did they find? Sadly, the new iPod touch doesn't follow in the "easily repaired" footsteps of its more expensive sibling, the iPhone 5. The new media player scored a mere three out of 10 on the company's repairability scale, so… better treat your new friend with kid gloves, folks. Other than that, the new iPod touch was found to come with only 512MB of RAM with a 1030mAh battery, which is up just a bit from the previous model's 930mAh. Check out the full teardown on the iFixit website!
Instapaper Developer Marco Arment Launches The Magazine
Ready for a modern iOS Newsstand publication aimed entirely at "geeks like us"? That's the promise behind The Magazine, the latest project from Instapaper developer Marco Arment. Rather than being strictly a tech-oriented publication, Arment promises to "explore other topics that like-minded geeks might find interesting." To entice readers to give it a try, the normal $1.99 per month subscription is free for the first seven days, with four new articles published every two weeks. The universal app is free to download and available now from the App Store, or you can catch Arment's introductory article online to get a taste of what you'll be getting first.
Rockmelt Debuts iPad Native App
Remember Rockmelt? The scrappy Chrome-based, Facebook-integrated web browser for the Mac hasn't made headlines lately, but that may be because the company was busy crafting something else entirely. On Thursday, Rockmelt introduced an iPad app that promises to be the "fast and fun way to discover and share the best of the web." The ad-free app offers minimal load times, speedy rendering and even syncs content so you can enjoy it offline, all in a unique, socially-minded user interface. Best of all, the 6.6MB app is absolutely free -- Facebook or Twitter users can log in to personalize the app, but a guest login is also available for those who just want to check out what it's all about.
Appeals Court Overturns Samsung Galaxy Nexus Injunction
Reuters reported on Thursday that a U.S. appeals court has overturned the preliminary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone. As you may recall, Apple filed a lawsuit back in February accusing the Korean manufacturer of infringing eight patents, at the same time requesting the court to ban the sale of the product. But Apple doesn't always get what it asks for, and this week the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Court tossed the decision, claiming the California court "abused its discretion in entering an injunction." Now the whole mess heads back to that same court for reconsideration...
Appoday Partners with Gamevil for Free Zombie Gunner
Who's ready for some blood-splattering action fun to get through the weekend? Appoday and Gamevil have joined forces to offer 40,000 pieces of in-app gold absolutely free with Zombie Gunner. That's a $3.99 savings which should be enough ammo to blow through a few thousand zombies this weekend, so head to the App Store and let's get started.
