Although we don't see Apple releases falling on Tuesday as much now as we did back in the Steve Jobs era, the company managed to push out patches for both iOS 6 and Apple TV yesterday, the latter of which will be of particular interest to Hulu Plus subscribers. But there were plenty of other releases as well, so let's dive headfirst into the five you'll want to know about...
Apple Plugs Passcode Security Hole with iOS 6.1.3 Update
They might have missed it in the last update or two, but Apple finally plugged the security hole that "could allow someone to bypass the passcode and access the Phone app" with iOS 6.1.3, available as either an over-the-air or standalone update on Tuesday. The update also touts improvements to the Maps app in Japan as well as a full range of security patches, four of which are credited to iOS jailbreak hacker evad3rs. No word yet on whether the update breaks the recent jailbreak effort, but as always, jailbreakers should steer clear of the update until they receive the all-clear.
Hulu Plus Introduces All-New Look with Apple TV Update 5.2.1
iOS 6.1.3 wasn't the only update Apple pushed out on Tuesday, with the new Apple TV 5.2.1 software update bringing an all-new look and feel for the Hulu Plus app as well. According to The Hulu Blog, content categories now live across the top navigation bar, with large, icon-driven trays below making it easy to access Shows You Watch and other content. "We built this to make sure you never miss a new episode or lose your place in a series," Hulu noted. To turn on Subtitles or change Audio while watching an episode, hold down the Select button until those options appear. Note you'll have to update to Apple TV Software Update 5.2.1 in order to receive the new Hulu Plus.
Adobe Introduces Premiere Elements 11 Editor, Quick Editor in Mac App Store
Right on the heels of its Photoshop Elements 11 Editor release last week, Adobe has released Premiere Elements 11 Editor to the Mac App Store, the latest version of the company's consumer-friendly video editing package. As usual, the Mac App Store version does not include the Elements Organizer found in the standalone $99.99 SRP version, but the Mac App Store price is only $79.99 to reflect that. If Premiere Elements 11 Editor is too much video editing power for you, Adobe has also released Premiere Elements 11 Quick Editor, a lightweight version best suited for beginners which includes only the "Quick" editing options from its big brother at a bargain price of only $29.99 on the Mac App Store.
Evernote Food for iOS 2.1 Adds OpenTable, Recipe Sharing
Foodies are about to find more reasons to love Evernote Food with the release of version 2.1, an update that now integrates ratings and reservations from OpenTable right into the free iOS app. Ready to share your favorite recipe with the world? Evernote Food now makes it easier than ever via Twitter, Facebook or email. The update also finally integrates better with the parent service, allowing recipes saved prior to the debut of the Food app to now be imported. There are plenty of other under-the-hood changes such as choosing photos from any album on your device, faster image uploads and improved search results, and as always, Evernote Food is available free on the App Store.
Report: Amazon in Talks with Record Labels About Subscriptions, Too
With both Apple and Google rumored to be in talks with music labels about Spotify style subscription offerings, would it really surprise anyone to find that Amazon is doing the same? The Verge reported Tuesday that the e-tailer is engaged in "very informal" talks with music labels about doing just that, building upon the company's existing cloud music storage and Cloud Player to provide an all-you-can-eat buffet of tunes. But can anyone topple the current market leader Spotify, which currently has six million paid subscribers?
