If you simply can't get enough news about the iPhone 5 as you wait to preorder your new handset beginning on Friday, we've assembled a few smaller stories that popped up after the big media event and throughout Tuesday evening for you to enjoy in one big gulp!
Apple Posts Video of iPhone 5 Media Event
Not feeling the love for the new iPhone and iPod products and need to escape to Cupertino's "reality distortion field" to get convinced? Apple has now posted the full video of yesterday's media event in San Francisco, available as streaming video or even as a 1080p HD download for those who might want to save it for posterity. (Regular 720p HD and even SD versions are also available.)
Phil Schiller Talks Up Lightning, Why NFC is Missing from iPhone 5
AllThingsD sat down with Apple senior vice-president Phil Schiller after the company's media event yesterday, where the veep was grilled over the absence of an NFC chip or wireless charging in the new iPhone 5. Schiller downplayed the importance of NFC for wireless payments, claiming “Passbook does the kinds of things customers need today.” The Apple exec also dismissed wireless charging, pointing out that such systems still have to be plugged into the wall and therefore don't offer much real convenience. Finally, Schiller touted the new Lightning dock connector as the the standard "for many years to come," blaming the thinness of its latest products for the need to ditch the beloved 30-pin dock connector.
iOS 6 Gold Master Released to Developers
Not much of a surprise given that it will be released to the public next Wednesday, September 19, but MacRumors is reporting Apple has pushed out the gold master of iOS 6 to its developer portal. While the software could change between now and next week, this is the version developers will use to tweak their apps accordingly for the iPhone 5's taller display and despite the iPhone 3GS being put out to pasture, iOS 6 still supports it, with a few exceptions such as turn-by-turn navigation.
Sprint's HD Voice Incompatible with iPhone 5
Engadget is reporting that the iPhone 5's swanky new HD Voice technology will not be compatible with Sprint's network. The carrier confirmed the bad news to Phone Scoop, explaining that its CDMA 1X Advanced technology is not simpatico with the HD Voice being used by Apple's latest handset. That's a bummer, to be sure...
Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plans on AT&T Capped at 5GB for LTE
MacRumors has confirmed with AT&T that it won't force users on older, grandfathered unlimited data plans to switch to newer limited plans to take advantage of 4G LTE on the iPhone 5 -- but after 5GB, your data will be speed throttled. If that sounds like a bummer, keep in mind that AT&T currently throttles 3G data for unlimited users starting at 3GB, so… that's actually an improvement, we suppose. However, you'll be unable to use FaceTime over cellular without moving to one of the new Mobile Share plans, so we'll call it a draw.
