Dear developers: If you're going to release an iOS 6-compatible app that takes advantage of new features like Passbook, the least you could do is update your app to support the swanky new iPhone 5 screen at the same time. But hey, no pointing fingers here… most of you guys have been doing a bang-up job of supporting that four-inch screen in record time. That is, with the exception of...
Starbucks App Adds Passbook Support, Forgets iPhone 5
Coffee mogul Starbucks updated their iPhone app on Wednesday night, bringing the long-awaited Passbook and iOS 6 support in addition to easier in-app signup for the company's Rewards program and the usual host of performance improvements and bug fixes. Unfortunately, one thing version 2.4 didn't bring was support for the iPhone 5's larger display, which seems a little odd to us. But hey, at least now we can buy that Double Chocolaty Chip Frappuccino without having to open the Starbucks app…
One Year Later, Where Are the Thunderbolt Docks?
MacRumors has published an interesting look at the state of Thunderbolt docks, which remain vaporware more than a year after first being announced. Belkin was the first to announce a Thunderbolt docking solution in September, 2011 but has revised it several times prior to release -- including a healthy $100 price increase to $399.99 in the process. The company is now aiming for Q1 2013, while competitor Matrox has a cheaper solution incoming for $249 which also missed a September, 2012 release date and is now targeted for December. Good thing we decided to just go with Apple's Thunderbolt Display, or we'd still be waiting...
Tweetbot Creators Release App.net Client for iOS
In addition to submitting their Mac version of Tweebot to the Mac App Store, the folks at Tapbots have been busy working on a new iOS app called Netbot. The app is basically Tweetbot, but designed as a client for the new App.net social network which allows you to post 256 character messages without having to view ads. Many early adopters consider it an improved version of Twitter, but given that App.net requires a paid monthly or annual subscription fee, it remains to see how fast it will catch on. However, if you've already done so, Netbot is ready and waiting for you in the App Store now, available in both iPhone and iPad flavors.
Apple Enlisting Retail Employees to Fix iOS 6 Maps
AppleInsider is reporting that Apple retail store managers have started enlisting employees to help report errors in the company's iOS 6 Maps app. According to ifoAppleStore.com, the initiative is aimed at recruiting more than 40,000 employees to speed up improving Maps, which Apple CEO Tim Cook claims is now a priority for the company. Reporting problems with the app isn't limited only to Apple employees -- anyone can do it simply by opening the "Report a Problem" option hidden under the Maps options in the lower right corner.
Pogoplug 3.3.0 Firmware Update Adds Drag & Drop to Web App
Pogoplug has announced a new 3.3.0 firmware that has started rolling out to all devices overnight, bringing full support for drag and drop with the web app for local devices, improved memory handling, memory leak fixes and improved performance from the company's hardware. There's nothing a Pogoplug user needs to do to get the update -- your hardware will just magically update and you'll be good to go. Wouldn't it be nice if all updates worked so efficiently…?
