They say you can't keep a good man down, but does the same apply to a maybe not-so-good retail chain? Despite all the headlines touting the end of Blockbuster's reign over the video store, the company still has a few independently owned branches across the U.S. that will continue the good fight -- find out about one such place in today's recap.
The folks at Tapbots swooped in with their first update to Tweetbot 3 for iPhone on Monday, restoring a few small features that customers lost with the all-new version. While the promised dark UI won't appear until the next version, Tweetbot 3.1 does bring the ability to use a list as your timeline, right swipe to quick reply, resize text within the app, view avatars as squares, hide timeline badges, email conversations and see when a user last tweeted under their profile. Tweetbot 3.1 is also still on sale for a limited time at $2.99, but this update is free for Tweetbot 3 owners.
With the 2013 holiday season fast approaching, many of us are trying to get an early jump on buying gifts for loved ones. Thankfully, help has arrived from an unlikely ally this year in the form of Flipboard's new Shopping category. In addition to curated magazines from leading retailers and celebrities such as Cynthia Rowley and Alyssa Milano, Flipboard's new "Flip It" bookmarklet allows users to add products to their own shopping magazine from virtually any e-tailer across the web, then share it with others -- how's that for a unique Christmas wish list?
Microsoft is no stranger to the Mac App Store, but the company quietly debuted one of its existing Mac applications on Apple's virtual storefront Monday that previously required a website download. SkyDrive for Mac allows OS X users to tap into their Microsoft SkyDrive cloud storage account and sync its contents back to a folder anywhere on their computer. Changes made to the SkyDrive folder are then synced back to the cloud, where they'll appear on any linked PCs or devices, including the iPhone, iPad or even Windows and Windows Phone gadgets. SkyDrive for Mac is a free download and version 17.0.3206.1015 can be installed right over any existing version that might already be in your Applications folder.
Sophos' Naked Security blog is reporting that Adobe's previous claim of three million customers being affected by a recent security breach continues to grow. A recent update bumped that number to 38 million, but based on a whopping 10GB database file that recently turned up online, there could now be as many as 150 million user records yanked off of Adobe's servers -- complete with user names, passwords and even password hints. The situation prompted the folks at LastPass to set up an email confirmation tool where Adobe customers past and present can find out if their user name was included, and offers advice on what to do beyond the mandatory password reset already in place.
The headlines may have Blockbuster retail stores quietly shuffling off this mortal coil by year's end, but that doesn't mean the end is entirely here. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that around 50 independently owned Blockbuster locations will still keep their lights on, including 26 stores across Texas and Alaska owned by Alan Payne. In a brief interview with the longtime Blockbuster veteran, Payne dishes on where he thinks the parent company went wrong, why his stores continue to thrive and how he may even use the corporate name to potentially expand his footprint, "maybe even in new places." Meanwhile, the rest of us will be picking the bones clean on 300 corporate-owned stores between now and January, 2014.
