Spacetime Studios has announced that they are working on a follow up to their well-known free iOS massively multiplayer game, Pocket Legends. Rather than a sequel to the successful fantasy game, they're switching genres altogether and crafting a whole new experience, with a science fiction theme. The game is dubbed Blackstar and is tentatively scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2011.
Pocket Legends [iTunes Link] has always been something of a darling in the iOS mobile gaming world. It brought us fully mobile MMO gaming far faster than most people suspected it would take. Some games had technically been iOS MMOs before, but they were usually scaled down games with much more isolated worlds, like Farmville.
With Blackstar, Spacetime Studios will have the benefit of nearly three years of experience working in the genre. The game will be centered around a struggle for dominance between futuristic human and alien races. It will also feature robust social features like chat and friend's lists, and will launch with three distinct character classes, each with a unique set of skills that can be customized.
Pocket Legends had quite a bit of success as a freemium download, so its probable that Blackstar will also release as a freemium game.
