Pwnage Tool 3.1.4 released - Unlocks 3.1.2 and 3GS

Pwnage Tool jailbreak

Good news for the jailbreaking community - the unofficial iPhone Dev Team has released version 3.1.4 of their Pwnage Tool jailbreak utility Tuesday. This version is mainly to address the issue of iPhone OS 3.1.2, which was released last Thursday.

In Pwnage Tool 3.1.4, the iPhone, 3G, and 3GS are all supported, even the first and second-generation iPod touch, though the latter can only be jailbroken. For the second-generation iPod touch, the device has to have been previously jailbroken. Unfortunately, third-generation iPod touches are completely incompatible.

Due to irreversible changes in the baseband in iPhone 3.1.x, Pwnage Tool will now only allow users to keep their devices unlocked if they have been relying on the custom IPSW files from 3.0 or earlier. If in this situation, users need to only install ultrasn0w from Cydia after restoring a custom IPSW so that there are no baseband restrictions.

iPhone 3GS owners can finally jailbreak their device now with 3.1.x, although Apple is expected to fix such exploits in future software updates. iPodnn recommends that those who want to keep a jailbroken 3GS should record ECID hashes for future reference.

avatarOh boy..

Now we can all install that crappy, buggy, unapproved software and then complain how the performance of the iPhone sucks. Great.

avatarJailbreak vs. Unlock

There are two different ways one can modify an iPhone in ways not authorized by Apple and AT&T: jailbreaking and unlocking.

Jailbreaking your iPhone lets you install apps from sources other than Apple's App Store.

Unlocking, on the other hand, lets you use an iPhone on a GSM network other than AT&T's. For instance, I'm on T-Mobile, and in order for my iPhone to work on T-Mobile's network, I must unlock my iPhone.
