Rayman 2, a 3D platformer originally released in 1999, has been ported over to the iPhone with the help of Gameloft, and Touch Arcade has mostly good things to say ... about the video and audio.
"In the graphics and sound department, Rayman 2 is great. It
looks just as I remembered it on the Dreamcast, and the soundtrack does
a great job of setting the mood of the game. Unfortunately, once you
get past how cool it is to be playing a late 90's console classic on
your phone, things start to quickly fall apart," says Eli Hodapp, who reviewed the game.
Eli notes that the controls that are used in the game are more cumbersome than they need to be. This is, of course, where games that were developed specifically for the iPhone and those that weren't differ. Games developed strictly for the iPhone generally have controls built around the device, while games that are ported over normally need controls like a virtual analog stick, and various buttons to control movements.
Touch Arcade notes that the save system in Rayman 2 is very difficult because when you take a phone call, your position in the game isn't saved and you must reload the game, cut scenes and all, in order to continue.
Rayman 2: The Great Escape hit the App Store last night for $6.99 [iTunes link], but we hope that Gameloft can fix the issues Touch Arcade notes for the many gamers happy to see Rayman on the iPhone, and for the people who purchased the game.
