It seems like an eternity ago that everyone was talking about RockMelt (including MacLife.com!), then the invitations arrived, folks poked around and the chatter subsided. That may change this week now that the social browser has received its first big update.
TechCrunch is reporting that RockMelt has jumped to version 0.8.36.74 this week, the first major update for the fledgling Chrome-based social browser. Earlier this month, MacLife.com compared RockMelt to other key web browsers on the Mac and even showed you how to make Safari 5 work more like the hip new kid in town, and now RockMelt has listened to its users and incorporated some changes.
The biggest among them is an update to the Chromium browser at RockMelt’s core, which has been updated to version 7 (TechCrunch notes that the open source Chromium browser is already up to version 9), which should offer more speed and stability as well as better HTML5 support.
A new Gmail Notifier app will keep you up to date when new e-mail arrives (you can install it by going to Gmail.com, signing in and clicking on the “Add Apps” button at the bottom of the App Edge) and now you can tweet directly from the Twitter app thanks to the new “compose” button at the top. Likewise, updating your Facebook status can quickly be done the same way.
The full list of changes is below -- now the only question is, will you be giving RockMelt another try?
• New Gmail Notifier App to let you know when you have new email. To install, just go to gmail.com, sign in, and click on the “Add Apps” button at the bottom of the App Edge
• Tweet directly from the Twitter App using the new “compose” button at the top
• Update your status directly from the Facebook App by clicking on the new “compose” button at the top
• Search within the Facebook, Twitter, and News Apps by typing in the new filter box (Windows users press CTRL+F to invoke)
• Compose messages, write on walls, or go straight to a website through richer context menus when you right-click on a Friend or App in the Edge
• Faster, more consistent Twitter and Facebook feed updates and notifications
• Look for more invites and improved notifications in the enhanced Invite App
• Hide or show edges while in full-screen mode, just like in the normal view
• Upgrade to Chromium 7 for improvements in speed and stability and better HTML 5 support
