You may recall back on May 18 that we reported Apple was preparing to launch its annual back to school promotion on the heels of the “Apple Store 2.0” reboot on May 22. Much like a Harold Camping rapture prediction, the promotion has yet to appear -- but the wait may soon be over.
BGR is reporting that Apple may announce this year’s back to school promotion during their annual Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off on June 6. That strikes us as odd timing since there are rumors of more exciting things (like iOS 5) that will undoubtedly overshadow such a promotion, but the clock is ticking since Apple has historically introduced the deal as early as May 25 (which it was last year) or as late as June 5 (the date it kicked off in 2007).
Aside from the usual educational discounts on Mac computers, the back to school promotion usually offers a free iPod touch (or $229 towards the iPod of your choice). But BGR’s source claims that Cupertino may have something more intriguing up their sleeve for 2011.
“Our source also let us know that there might be something new in the works, as well… they heard that it’s possible Apple might offer students up to $200 off an iPad with the purchase of a new Mac,” the report teases. “If true, this would be pretty great deal. If only Apple could make enough of them…”
A discounted iPad 2 would certainly be enough to entice us to drop a couple grand on a new Mac (assuming we actually needed another one)… how about you? We’ll all know soon enough, since WWDC 2011 kicks off in San Francisco on June 6.
