According to a report from The Korea Times, Apple began testing a new iPad screen manufactured by LG, as well as with longtime frenemy Samsung. The screen, reportedly capable of supporting quad extended graphics (QXGA) with a monster screen resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, would certainly continue to differentiate the iPad from its would-be competitors. But that Samsung is also a part of the deal makes us scratch our heads just a little, especially because the two are in major competitors.
The new screen would propel the next generation iPad further ahead than any other tablet currently on the market, and the market is already overwhelmingly in Cupertino's corner. But what's interesting is that while Samsung's Galaxy Tab is a major contender in the tablet wars and at the heart of ongoing patent disputes and lawsuits with Apple, not to mention that Apple is shopping around for a new manufacturer for the next-generation A6 processor, the two companies are working together.
Samsung feels fairly confident about the fact that despite their disagreements, Apple is not going somewhere else. Acknowledging that Apple may find other manufacturers to provide customized chips for its new products, a senior Samsung executive claims that "the same can’t be said about LCDs." He adds that the company is not "affected significantly by Apple’s changing approach."
