Apple received registered trademark status for the number 280 last week, according to a report by Trademarkia. Before you get all out of sorts that Cupertino is slowly taking ownership of even our numbers and letters, it is important to note that the number is protected as part of the graphic icon for the Maps app.
There. That makes sense, right? Maybe?
According to the mark description, it makes sense to Apple. “The mark consists of a gray map with streets in gray and white and highways in yellow and orange, a highway sign in blue, yellow and red bearing the number 280 in white, and a gray and red pin.”
The icon for the app shows the location of Apple headquarters: 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California. Just off, of course, Interstate 280.
So if you're looking to develop your own mapping app, and on your icon you want to use an image of a pin indicating your headquarters next to a big highway, be careful. Make sure your office is not next to Interstate 280.
