There are literally hundreds upon hundreds of awesome classic games currently available on the iPhone. We should know; we just picked up 10-15 of them during yesterday's awesome mega sale. But up until now there's been one glaring omission: Double Dragon. Now that omission has been rectified, and the classic NES beat 'em up will be arriving in the App Store soon.
This isn't just some lazy release though. Rather than releasing a straight port of the original game, Aksys Games is revamping the original game with all-new content. The game will have an all new set of attacks, new music, and updated graphics. It will also include new enemies, new bosses, hidden characters, and even achievements. And of course, what would be the point of playing Double Dragon if you can't play with a friend. The game will use Bluetooth multiplayer to facilitate cooperative play.
We'll be watching this one closely as it gets nearer to release. We're all for retrofitting classic games for modern relevancy, but any time you tinker with a classic formula you run the risk of losing what made the original so special. Plus the gigantic control pad takes up nearly half of the screen. Which is also slightly worrying.
Pricing details have yet to be announced. Hopefully this game will go on to sell well so we can get the Battletoads Double Dragon updated release we've been clamoring to get for the past 15 years.
