Well, that was fast -- mere hours after announcing that OS X Lion would launch on Wednesday, Apple has pulled the trigger right at 8:30am EST as rumored. That’s right, get your wallet ready, because the big cat is ready and waiting for you!
Apple has officially released Mac OS X Lion to the Mac App Store as of 8:30am EST on Wednesday as promised during their Q3 2011 financial call on Tuesday afternoon. As we all wait for the internet to crumble into itself under the strain of all those 3.74GB downloads (ours is still chugging along at this writing), the big news is that OS X Lion isn’t exactly a Mac App Store exclusive after all.
“Users who do not have broadband access at home, work or school can download Lion at Apple retail stores and later this August, Lion will be made available on a USB thumb drive through the Apple Store (www.apple.com) for $69 (US),” the company’s press release reveals.
OS X Lion Server is also available from the Mac App Store for $49.99, which of course requires OS X Lion 10.7 before it can be installed. Unlike the nearly 4GB Lion download, Server is a svelte, broadband-friendly 14.5MB.
Stay with MacLife.com throughout the day, we’ll have plenty of OS X Lion coverage flying into your browser!
