Today, The China Times reports that Apple will release a touchscreen tablet netbook that will make its debut in October of this year, and we should expect the device to have a price tag of $800.
A translation of the report from MacRumors and Gizmodo reveals:
Taiwan's high-tech supply chain companies said Apple will debut its
first netbook in October; Apple will pose itself to tackle the
Christmas shopping season. Three corporations – Foxconn, Wintek,
Dynapack have received direct orders from Apple.
If you're one of the people that have been following the whole netbook story, Wintek will sound familiar. Why? Because they are the company that has supplied Apple with lots of touchscreen panels for tablet use. There is also a translation of the pricing report which explains why these devices (if true) will cost you $800:
Because Apple will adopt touch screen technology on its netbooks, Apple
will not target low-end consumers, avoiding direct competition with
Acer, Asus, as well as their less-than-500-dollars netbooks. Apple's
netbook (or a "tablet" as many call it,) will probably be sold at
around $800 USD each.
There is no official confirmation if any of this is true, so it's hard to tell if The China Times is actually confirming this independently or if they are merely regurgitating rumors and giving all of us false hope. We're hoping it's the former.
But the question still remains, will this be using OS X or iPhone OS or something entirely different altogether? There have not been any talks about what software this device will run.
Anyways, here's hoping that it's true! Would you go want a touchscreen tablet netbook?
