Safari Escapes from Beta

After a few months in beta, Safari 4 is ready for action. Whether you're using Leopard or, (ahem) Windows, the new Safari is ready for download now.

If you haven't been test driving the beta, here are the new features.

The ‘Top Sites’ page allows you to navigate to your favorite websites by previewing up to 24 thumbnails all in one page. You can also personalize the display by relocating each in the grid, making it easier for you to find your top sites. You can also tell if each top site has changed since your last visit when you see a white star on the top-right corner by looking on the grid page. And, of course, each would be at your disposal.

If you're a fan of Cover Flow, Safari has you covered. Now you can review your site history and bookmarked sites in full-page versions, just like iTunes or navigating the Finder.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Just type what you’re looking for in the ‘Search’ bar. Typing a simple word or phrase will search through the whole browser.

Apple reports that Safari  is the world’s fastest web browser, overshadowing Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Chrome. ‘Nitro Engine’ performs JavaScript at almost 8 times faster than Internet Explorer 8 and more than 4 times faster than Firefox 3 (testing on iBench and SunSpider).

‘Developer Tools’ allows you observe the structure of a page, debug JavaScript, optimize performance and compatibility, inspect offline databases, or test experimental pieces of code. Click here for more information and here for all 150 features.

Download and enjoy the new Safari 4 here for free! Happy browsing.

avatarI'm definitely noticing some

I'm definitely noticing some extra "zippy-ness"

Also, I like the minor graphics tweaks here and there.

So far, one thing I haven't found in safari is all of the free add-ons Firefox has, like Skipper, for passwords and others.

avatarMy beautiful tabs, bohoo!

I don't care what everyone says, I miss tabs on top :(
If apple has a fully working feature, why not add it as an option? Beats me..

Ah well. Back to conforming I guess.

avatartabs on top...

i really liked those! they were easy, convenient, and intuitive, now if you don't already have a tab open you have to hit command+t, and that's just annoying.

avatarSafari Freeze

Safari freezes while starting up and I have to force quit. I've sent reports to Apple, at least one a day, since installing the beta version. I hoped it would be fixed when the full version came out but, though it's better, it still freezes way too often.

avatarSafari Mac Freeze-Constance

Hello Constance,

You know, I've been working with Macs and PCs for quite some time and consistently , friends and associates call me because of the same problems. Fear not my friend because Macs, hands down are the best, with reference to IT Servicing, Graphic layout presentations or simply web searching or reading email.

One thing I notice about "Novice Mac Users", Mac makes everything so easy and comfortable to use that often times, we simply take many normal operations, procedures and tasks for granted. That's what happens when we get too comfortable. Nevertheless, every time I have to assist anyone with their Macs, even though the common problem is the system FREEZES, I always check the simplest things first. Without doubt, the first thing that I notice, is their desktop screen is so over loaded that not only does the system perform slowly on initial turn on, but it stops. I think it funny, although it not funny to the plagued owner, because it appears that some folks love to have their entire world on their desktop. Imagine if you will, a physical filing cabinet, what do you think would happen if you stored the tens of thousands of paper files on top of the filing cabinet instead on inside of the drawers? All it takes is one small mishap and all your files are everywhere.

Clear off your desktop with exception for "Common Application Program Shortcuts and HDs", which can be kept in your DOCK. Maintain using your files to store extra goodies/shortcuts, so that everything is organized. Now, if you understand or have sufficient know how and are confident in your abilities, to access your Applications Folder> then your Utilities Folders>, then your Disk Utility.app> activate your Operations/Main Hard Drive (the drive with your operating system; OS ), once the Main Hard Drive has been activated ( highlighted ), at the top of the window it gives you options; First Aid, Erase, Raid, Restore , activate the "Repair, or First Aid> then below that, you will have the options of ; "Verify Disk Permissions, Repair Disk Permissions", activate the Repair Disk Permissions. Let this process run until it is completed, once it is complete, close all windows ( incidentally, all windows should have been closed prior to starting this procedure) and restart your computer, BUT! here's the tricky part; when you turn on your computer you will hear the startup sound of your Mac (if you can't hear it, put on your earphones (give it a practice rehearsal first)) as it sounds, hold PRESS-DOWN, simultaneously "The Options, The Control, The R and the P Keys", all together, hold them down, until you hear the same; Startup Mac Sound, then quickly release all four of the keys together. Your system should start up with no problem. This procedure is to repair your initial instructions for your HDD and to set your PRAM back to a stable operation in addition to removing everything that can slow down your opening operation from the dreaded "Desktop Clutter". [ If by some strange chance that you have a ton of peripheral equipment( printers, scanners, burners, speakers, everything) connected to your Mac, please disconnect every piece except the original equipment( Original Monitor, keyboard, Mouse ONLY) delivered by the manufacturer. ]

I'm sorry about the long explanation, but many times, if you solve the simplest areas first, you have a chance to remedy other top mounted software problems. Each top loaded software, many times has clashes with various software settings. This method is the simplest way that makes sure that it's not your HDD Operational Instructions which can cause some browser programs to flow easier/difficultly and this will save you a couple of hundred dollars in a "Tech Shop".

Ciao Drene

avatarSafari Freezes

Safari is indeed fast, but it doesn't get along well with some websites especially Yahoo. Since I installed snow leopard ,I have never finished my mail,or browsed My Yahoo without atleast one freeze,

I have repaired permissions, dumped add-ons and preferences to no avail. It seems like yahoo and safari really hate each other.

firefox is just about as fast and doesn't freeze anywhere. so firefox is now my default browser

avatarIn case anyone needs further

In case anyone needs further evidence of just how hot Apple’s iPhone is around the world, Belgian newspaper De Standaard reports today on the theft of nearly 4,000 iPhones from CEVA Logistics, a distribution company with a warehouse in Willebroek. Custom Research Papers.
