We weren’t even aware of a timetable for the next major Mac OS X 10.7 release, and already folks are saying it’s already delayed.

OS X Daily is reporting on recent rumors from Daring Fireball’s John Gruber which cast some doubt on the possibility of getting a peek at the next Mac OS X 10.7 at Apple’s forthcoming Worldwide Developer Conference this June.

“A few months ago, I heard suggestions that Apple had tentative plans to release a developer beta of Mac OS X 10.7 at WWDC this June,” Gruber writes. “That is no longer the case. Mac OS X 10.7 development continues, but with a reduced team and an unknown schedule. It’s my educated guess that there will be no 10.7 news at WWDC this year, and probably none until WWDC 2011.

“Apple’s company-wide focus has since been focused intensely on one thing: iPhone OS 4.1,” concludes Gruber. “The number one priority at Apple is to grow mobile market share faster than Android. Anything that is not directly competitive with Android is on the back burner.”

Could it be true? Is Apple’s mobile iPhone OS now more important to the company than its legacy Macintosh operating system?

OS X Daily seems to think so: “The potential of dominating the mobile market share with iPhone OS powered devices and the iPad is probably a far greater opportunity for Apple than expanding the relatively small Mac desktop computing market share, especially when more and more computing is done on the go. Combine that with all the excitement surrounding iPhone OS 4 and I think it makes sense that WWDC 2010 is going to be an iPhone OS centric event as Apple is heavily focused on their mobile platform.”

It will be interesting to see where the desktop-oriented Mac OS X has yet to go, especially in light of Snow Leopard 10.6’s modest feature set and Apple’s focus on fine-tuning the operating system for better performance. We’ll all know soon enough, as June is just around the corner…
