When it comes to hard drive makers, there are only a couple of ways they can stand out in the crowd: Make ‘em smaller, make ‘em bigger or add connectivity. In the case of Seagate, they’ve gone with “make ‘em bigger” for their latest GoFlex Desk, which now tops out at a whopping 4TB for only $249.
Seagate has announced a new model of their popular FreeAgent GoFlex Desk external hard drive, which now maxes out at 4TB -- yes, that’s four terabytes! -- with a USB 3.0 (backward compatible with USB 2.0) connection for only $249.99. Even better, you won’t have to wait months to get your hands on one, because they’re in stock and shipping now.
“Announcing the world's first 4TB external drive,” reads Seagate’s announcement to customers. “With enough capacity for 1.2 million photos, 1,000 full-length movies, or nearly 66,000 hours of music, the 4TB GoFlex Desk drive will let you store, protect, and do more with everything that's important to you.”

Keep in mind this new marvel isn’t a pair of 2TB drives striped together in a RAID as we’ve seen before -- it’s a single 4TB hard drive in an external case, which the company is touting as an industry first. Aside from entrusting that much data to a single hard drive, there’s not much downside to this announcement.
Well, unless Seagate announces a 5TB external hard drive for even less money next year…
