Sinner, Be Gone: Apple Asks Smut To Pack Its App Store Bags

If you’re a puritan disturbed by the recent avalanche of partially-naked women (and men!) parading around half-dressed in the App Store these days, Apple may have just healed thyself.
The blogosphere is brimming with news that Apple has made yet another new change to the App Store -- and it may not be a welcome one for those with an appetite for sexy, according to TechCrunch.
The latest brouhaha comes by way of a now-removed app called Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored) from developer Jon Atherton, who received the following missive from Apple:
The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored), contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution. However, we have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately.
We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter. If you believe you can make the necessary changes so that Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored) complies with our recent changes, we encourage you to do so and resubmit for review.
Sincerely,
iPhone App Review
While it’s always been Apple’s policy to reject anything with nudity, a number of creative developers have been filling up the App Store in recent months with a host of apps featuring scantily-clad models of both sexes. But the good times may be at an end, as it’s not only Wobble iBoobs that appears to have gotten the axe -- TechCrunch tried downloading apps like Exotic Positions and Sexy Women and found that both came back with errors and nothing to download.
Perhaps the purists have come knocking on Apple’s door at long last, although most of the so-called “sexy” apps in the App Store are less titillating than what’s featured on network television. It seems that for all of the forward progress the App Store has made thus far this year, this may be yet another step backward for developers.
Oh, and if you’re curious, Wobble iBoobs was an app designed to let you add “jiggle points” to any photo -- you get the idea.

That was a good act by the apple realizing that the people do exist in the world who have respect and shame for the opposite sex

In the name of decency, Apple has perhaps gone a bit too far. And then they wonder why people jailbreak their devices in order to install third party applications. Their policies are inconsistent and it's getting kind of ridiculous now.

After moving to Dubai I've seen this app, and I've been thinking the same, if there's a way to control apple apps, especially for my kids. I cannot be with them all the time to check what they've just opened or downloaded.

I'm glad to see the smut getting kicked out. I'm tired of seeing it all over the place. If you want porn, there is plenty of it out there, and much of it is available for viewing from your iPhone.

I'm glad Apple took the initiative to address the proliferation of adult-themed apps in the App Store. This isn't about Apple pushing its morals on their customers, I think they are trying to provide a place that is appropriate for people of all ages, which I believe is the responsible thing to do. I thought the App Store was starting to look kind of trashy and as a father of young children who have iPods I was trying to figure out how to deal with that. It does not mean that people who want these types of apps cannot get them, it just means that these particular apps are not the predominate apps people see when they visit the store. In the end the App Store reflects Apple's image and market and they naturally want to protect that, but their decision also helps me in my responsibilities as a parent. Thank you, Apple.

i'm an iMac & iPhone buyer/user for some years now & have bought apps in the past : a Navigon gps app, a compass, a spirit level, LogMeIn - to quote a few.. - all of them pretty saucy as you can see... i find it pretty sad ( pathetic being perhaps too strong a word in this politically correct world of ours ?... ) if we need someone else's decision to ''protect'' us + our offspring from ''smut'' - or even to tell us what smut is...that Apple don't slap said ''smut'' on the App Store's main window...absolutely, obvious, granted ! that it would require to log in to a specific App Store area to access it...why not, sure, no problem ! now.... to ban it ? JEEZ, what a sanctimonious, holier than thou & hypocritical move .... but let's face it, nothing more than just plain sad - after all, even a swim wear catalog was removed although reinstated later....LOL...how does it go : beauty is in the eyes of the beholder ? then i guess so is dirt, lewdness, immorality, etc....LIGHTEN UP & let's not worry : thank God we have all these people watching over our welfare : Banks over ''our'' economy, agro/food industry over what shelf life enhancing additives are safe/ good for us to eat, drug companies to tell us what to take to heal the ailments provoked by the stuff we ate, car makers to decide what's safe.......Toyota anyone ?.....WHAT A SAD JOKE that amidst all of this - and A LOT MORE ... - someone is actually worrying about 1 more or 1 less pair of boobs, butt, male or female nude body parts.....sorry but i can't resist, politically correct or not : it IS pathetic !by the way, not that i owe any explaining or justifying: i don't have ANY porn in my computer

Not all of us who agree with this decision are ashamed of our sexuality, as someone commented. Nor is this necessarily a "morality" decision by Apple. Apple has to consider the kind of content that they offer and the impact that content has on their image. Frankly, I'm glad to see the smut getting kicked out. I'm tired of seeing it all over the place. If you want porn, there is plenty of it out there, and much of it is available for viewing from your iPhone.

I downloaded Wobble months and months ago. Also, I totally second whatever Orkun said above. He's clearly thought this through.

Why does Apple feel it's necessary to be a moral compass? Not everyone is ashamed of sexuality. I subscribe to the "if you don't like it, don't listen to or watch it" philosophy. Freedom of choice is what America is all about. Perhaps Apple is better suited to do business in China rather than the US.
