Ever wonder what Siri would be doing if Apple hadn't scooped her up? Apparently, the voice assistant technology would have been bundled with every Verizon Droid handset the carrier sold. (Talk about dodging a bullet!)
The Verge is reporting that the startup behind Siri had inked a deal with Verizon Wireless back in 2009 with the intention of preinstalling the now-familiar voice assistant software in all of its Droid smartphones.
Needless to say, this was prior to Apple swooping in and buying up the company, but a new Huffington Post article called "Siri Rises" details how the technology came to be and just how close we came to it being an Android favorite.
According to the report, Verizon had not only signed a contract for Siri, but had actually shot commercials promoting the upcoming feature. Those plans were scrapped after Cupertino bought the company outright, eventually introducing Siri as a key new feature of the iPhone 4S in 2011.
With only one of the three Siri co-founders still employed by Apple and former iOS boss Scott Forstall -- the technology's biggest cheerleader -- on his way out, it remains to be seen what the future next holds for Siri.
