When a page on Sling Media's site caught the attention of Engadget yesterday the Slingbox/iPhone owning masses let out a collective "WTF!"
We spoke with Sling Media this morning and they confirmed that SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone would only work with the companies current line up. Sling Media will support the Slingbox SOLO, Slingbox PRO and Slingbox PRO-HD devices going forward not only for the iPhone app, but for any future software or services coming out of the company.
The Sling Media rep told us that it was tough decision for the company, but they based their decision by looking at the company's roadmap and concluding that the best customer experience would be gained by only supporting the latest devices. No technical issues were presented as to the reasoning for not supporting legacy Sling devices. Sling Media is offering $50 off a new Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox PRO-HD to current owners of the original Slingbox, Slingbox AV or Slingbox TUNER.
The rep also informed us that they were in contact with Apple regarding the release of the recently submitted SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone and that the app worked great. No price was given for the forthcoming app.
