Back in January we gave Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed a "good" rating, calling it a "entertaining burst of nostalgia-drenched fun" while noting a few downsides as well. If those minuses were enough to dissuade you from its original $4.99 asking price, you'll be happy to know that Sega's spirited race is now free to play on iOS as of today.
If you've already bought the game, don't worry (too much): you'll get a VIP pass that unlocks Sonic and three other characters and you'll be able to play the game add-free. It seems, however, that you might have to pay for additional characters that you haven't unlocked, as well as additional tracks and additional difficulty levels.
The poor MFi controller support was one of reviewer Andrew Hayward's major concerns in his review, and allegedly Sega assuaged some of those concerns with improved functionality. In addition, the free-to-play update also lets you share replays of your matches with Everyplay.
Another content update is expected to drop on April 29, when Sega will add Disney's Wreck-It Ralph and Metal Sonic as playable characters. If you're running iOS 7, you can pick up the app via the App Store here.
