In case you missed it last year, Chaos Rings [iTunes Link] was one of the very best RPGs ever to be released on the iOS platform. Even after the release of Final Fantasy III, it's still probably the best. Made by Square Enix, the legendary purveyors of fine RPGs (Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest,) it was one of the first iOS games to truly justify a high $13 price tag. Now, apparently Square Enix found some success with the title because they're expanding the series with two brand new games.
The first game is called Chaos Rings Omega and will be a prequel to the first Chaos Rings game that was first released just over a year ago in April 2010. Though we have very little information so far, the game is said to be arriving in the App Store in early May. Although the source for that info is a Japanese gaming magazine, so it's possible it will only be available in Japan. That said, the original Chaos Rings was released worldwide all at once. So there's a chance that its prequel will follow suit.
Unfortunately, we know even less about its counterpart, Chaos Rings 2. The game was revealed in a teaser ad in the same magazine. Presumably they're looking to expand on the Chaos Rings universe by exploring the times just before the original's events and afterward as well.
Depending on your outlook, Square Enix has become famous/infamous for either striking while the iron is hot, and/or overplaying and diluting its franchises. One of their most popular RPGs, Final Fantasy 7, for instance has received quite a bit of fan ire because of a host of sub-par tie-in media over the last decade.
Chaos Rings is one of our favorite series on the App Store, bar none, so we'll be bringing you updates on both of these games as they get closer to release.
