How does one gauge whether or not iOS device thefts are a huge problem in one city? Well, if the local police department forms a task squad solely dedicated to tracking down the perpetrators, things are probably kind of rough. Apparently, the NYPD is taking a serious approach to a growing problem.
"We're looking for ways to find individuals who have stolen Apple products and return the products to their original owners," said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne, in a report for the New York Post. "It is being done to learn the pattern [of] who is stealing."
Every time an Apple iPhone or iPad is stolen, a team of detectives at the NYPD try to use the International Mobile Station Equipment Identity number to track down the pilfered device. Working in congress with Apple, the NYPD receives location information from Cupertino, and the police officers will make an attempt to get the device back.
And the tracking doesn't stop at the New York city limits, either. Apparently, one iPad was recovered from the Dominican Republic with the assistance of an NYPD intelligence officer stationed in Santo Domingo. Wow.
Be forewarned potential iOS thieves: you're being watched. Well, assuming the device was stolen from New York, anyway.
