A new report claims that Apple will kick the iPhone’s camera up a notch next year with the inclusion of a 5 megapixel sensor.
That’s the word from Taiwanese tech journal
DigiTimes today (
via AppleInsider), who claim that OmniVision, the supplier of CMOS image sensors for the current iPhone, expects to see demand skyrocket next year -- as high as 45 million! The report also details that OmniVision is already set to supply a 5-megapixel camera for the next-generation iPhone, presumed to arrive around June, 2010 if history is any indication.
OmniVision anticipates that Apple could ship between 40 million and 45 million iPhones in 2010, up from the 20 million thus far estimated in 2009.
In April of this year, rumors pegged OmniVision as the supplier for the 3.2-megapixel sensor that ultimately wound up in the iPhone 3GS, beating out Aptina, who provided the 2-megapixel camera used in the previous iPhone 3G. OmniVision also reportedly provides sensors for the video camera in the new iPod nano, and is expected to ship about 65 million total units to Apple this year alone.
OmniVision was also rumored to be providing a camera for the newest iPod touch, although alleged last-minute hardware issues made that a no-show at the annual September event. A teardown of the iPod touch reveals empty space where an iPod nano-style video camera is presumed to go, and sources say a camera in the iPod touch is still in the cards for the future.
