While many consider Windows Media a relic from the Stone Age of computing, there's still plenty of content out there and few ways to play it on the Mac. That's why it's good to hear that the official Windows Media player on the Mac has now been updated with support for OS X Mountain Lion.
Telestream has announced the availability of Flip4Mac 3.0, a major upgrade to the company's official Windows Media player on the Mac. This update brings complete compatibility for Microsoft's video and audio codec using QuickTime Player under both OS X Lion 10.75 as well as OS X Mountain Lion.
Flip4Mac 3.0 features completely modernized code optimized for the latest versions of Mac OS X, with 64-bit audio support as required by QuickTime Player in both Lion and OS X Mountain Lion. Gatekeeper support also means the software is signed by Apple for easy, secure installation.
The latest version also includes a brand-new Flip Player which supports everything QuickTime has to offer, plus Windows Media, dynamic navigation controls, distraction-free viewing and the ability to upgrade to Player Pro for even more features.
Available as a $9 upgrade from within the System Preferences pane, Player Pro adds the ability to navigate like a pro using the JKL keys as well as Command+Period stepping, slow-motion playback, the ability to scale, crop, rotate or trim videos, convert Windows Media to other formats and much more.
Flip4Mac 3.0 is a free update for existing Studio, Studio Pro and Studio Pro HD customers. A free version is available for new customers, with paid options ranging from the $29 Player Pro to the $49 Studio and even the $179 Studio Pro HD for higher-end users looking to encode WMV files on their Mac.
