If you were born more than 30 years ago, you probably remember the Atari 2600. And that means you probably remember the days when developer Activision was pumping out all kinds of cool game cartridges for the platform, including a personal favorite of ours which is making the jump to iOS today. Need a clue? Why, just keep reading our recap for Thursday, August 9, 2012 and find out...
OMG! Activision's Classic PITFALL! on iOS
It may not quite be the Atari 2600 classic we enjoyed 30 years ago, but Activision has released PITFALL! today in a universal iOS app to celebrate the classic game's anniversary this year. That's right: Pitfall Harry is back and better than ever, "re-envisioned and re-booted" in a 99-cent iOS game! Now, the kids might cry foul and accuse PITFALL! of being a Temple Run clone, but those of us at a certain age would certain dispute that accusation. Yes, it's "an adrenaline-fueled, free-running adventure set in a deadly jungle with twists and turns that will always keep you on your toes," but hey… PITFALL! was there first, rocking our worlds in 1982 before these Temple Run-loving pipsqueaks were even born. So, you know what to do: Head to the App Store and drop that 99 cents in support of this classic game, because that's exactly what we're going to do the minute this post is done!
Pulse Introduces Web-Based News Reader
The folks at Pulse have been teasing that something big is coming via Twitter, and today they took the wraps off Pulse for the Web, a browser-based version of the same slick reader app found on mobile devices. Best of all, the web app is synced with your existing apps, so you can just sign in and start reading from any browser, then pick right back up again when you're on the go. Oddly, Pulse got some assistance from Microsoft for the multitouch gestures used on the web app, so users viewing the site from Internet Explorer 10 will actually get the best possible experience from it. But fear not: Pulse for Web is also available on Safari, Chrome and Firefox as well. Check it out from the embedded YouTube video below, or head straight to the website and sign in!
Amazon Cloud Player Adds Sonos Support
Amazon's recent updates to Cloud Player gave users the ability to listen to their purchased MP3 music from almost any device, be it Mac or PC, iOS or Android, but what about going beyond the usual places? Today, Amazon has announced that Cloud Player is now available on the Sonos Wireless Hi-Fi System, which allows owners to stream in their music anywhere in their home. “Our goal is to enable customers to enjoy all their music, wherever they are, and on any device,"said Steve Boom, vice president of Digital Music for Amazon. "Launching on Sonos today is an important part of that strategy, as our customers have been asking us to add Sonos to the list of compatible Cloud Player devices ever since we first launched Cloud Player." And Amazon isn't stopping there: The company is promising support for more devices and platforms later this year, presumably including Roku, as previously announced.
10 Finalists Announced for App Idol Contest
The gang at App Idol have finally narrowed down 680 applicants to arrive at 10 finalists today. Now all that remains is to have the winner chosen by four esteemed judges, who will decide which of the 10 is going to win $1,000 prize money as well as having their app developed by Locassa, along with a huge publicity package from the likes of IPhoneAppCafe, iPhoneLife and others, including Mac|Life (yes, disclaimer here, we're listed as a sponsor for this event). Curious about which contest might have the moxie to win this sucker? Then head over to the iPhoneAppCafe website and click away to watch the 10 finalists, where you can judge for yourself which one has the right stuff.
StoryBundle Offers DRM-Free E-Books for Whatever You're Willing to Pay
We love bundles, and we also happen to really like e-books, so that means StoryBundle is likely going to be one of the greatest pairings in history, right up there with peanut butter and jelly! The concept is simple: Seven fantastic e-books for one low, "pay what you want" price. Best of all, the titles have no DRM, which makes them readable on just about any device you have in your arsenal (and probably a whole lot of others you might not). So just how cheap can you grab the first "Big Bang Bundle" for? That's up to you, but those who pay at least $7 will get two bonus books, with sequels to John Gone and Bypass Gemini, two books featured in the first bundle.
