THWOMP! Super NES emulator demonstrated on the iPad
A developer known for his classic video game emulators for the iPhone has demonstrated a Super Nintendo Entertainment System emulator on the iPad.
On Sunday, ZodTTD posted a video on blip.tv showing his snes4iphone app running on the iPad.
"I just got my iPad and the first thing I did was install a build of snes4iphone made specifically for non-jailbroken iDevices," ZodTTD wrote in the comments beneath the video.
In the video, the developer chooses Super Mario Kart from a list of ROM files, then uses controls superimposed on the screen to play.
The video is scaled up to the iPad's screen. Gizmodo points out that all classic emulators will need to use scaling, because the iPad's screen resolution is much greater than the iPhone's.
Unfortunately, you won't find snes4iPhone in the app store, so getting it onto your iDevice may be a challenge.
We have no idea how ZodTTD installed snes4iPhone onto the iPad.
According to its FAQ, you can try or buy snes4iPhone through RockApp, which is an app store run by Monument, Colorado-based Rock Your Phone, Inc.
But according to Rockapp's documentation, you should use geohot's blackra1n iPhone unlocker to install Rockapp.
Finally, you'll have to source the video game ROM files yourself, and use SSH to place those files onto your iDevice.
If people are willing to go to all that trouble, is it possible there's a market there, waiting to be tapped by Nintendo? Maybe so, but Nintendo hasn't made any public indication it wants to develop anything for the iPad.
Here's the video, if you'd like to take a peek yourself. If you recall the game vividly, but you're trying not to feel old, don't think about the fact that Super Mario Kart was released around 18 years ago.
