Three must be a lucky number for the Dev-Team -- the group’s untethered jailbreak for iOS has managed to stick over the last trio of Apple updates, with this week’s iOS 4.3.3 being no exception.
The Dev-Team Blog is reporting that their PwnageTool and redsn0w tools have already been updated for iOS 4.3.3, which Apple released on Wednesday to squash a location services bug. Apparently, Cupertino didn’t otherwise touch the device firmware, since the hackers claim the latest version is still vulnerable to their untethered jailbreak exploit.
“Apple released iOS 4.3.3 on Wednesday, and once again the untethered jailbreak exploit that @i0n1c created for 4.3.1 still works,” the Dev-Team Blog announced on Friday morning. “That makes it an unprecedented three firmwares where the same userland exploit works. We’re not exactly sure why Apple hasn’t fixed the hole yet, but we’re not complaining!
“Today’s PwnageTool and redsn0w incorporate @i0n1c’s port to 4.3.3 (it’s ironic that such a long-lasting untether doesn’t even have an official name!),” the blog post continues. “It also of course uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit to inject the jailbreak. The 4.3.3 untether works on all devices that actually support 4.3.3 except for the iPad2.”
That list includes the GSM-based iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, third and fourth-generation iPod touch, first-gen iPad and second-gen Apple TV (note that the Apple TV software wasn’t updated this week). As the Dev-Team mentioned, there is still no jailbreak for the iPad 2, although they claim that it “remains under development” with no ETA at this time.
