If you follow any of the Mac|Life staff on Twitter, you may have noticed tweets from a mysterious service known as Turntable.fm. Imagine iTunes DJ on the internet and you get a good idea of what Turntable.fm is.

The service, only accessible via Facebook Connect, allows users to create a room where up to five occupants can "DJ". If you're not DJing, you can just sit back, relax and listen to what the DJs are spinning.

The DJs create a queue of songs by searching the site's extensive music library or by uploading music from their own personal library on their computer. They then take turns playing their carefully chosen songs for the room. Occupants of the room can vote the song either Awesome or Lame, but if they get too many Lame votes, then their song gets skipped and the next DJ gets a chance to please the crowd.
Awesome votes, on the other hand, not only keep the song playing, it also generates points for the DJ, which can then be used to update a DJ's avatar. Earn enough DJ points and you can get a Deadmau5 or Daft Punk avatar.
It sounds pretty cool, right? Wait, until you try it out. The staff has been obsessed with the service for the past few days. We have our own room and we've set about creating themes for each day. Thursday was 80s jams and today we're spinning covers of our favorite songs. We just load up our DJ Queues and enjoy the gems found by our fellow editors, writers, and readers.
There's a chat room so you can praise, or hassle, the DJs for their choices or just talk about music in general.
The service is in beta right now and sometimes, it shows. We weren't able to search for songs yesterday morning. A few rooms weren't accessible and a few times the wrong song started playing. It's weird to expect Gary Numan and get Dwight Yoakam.
Seriously, you need to try the service out with your friends. It's the social music service we've been waiting for.
The Mac|Life Turntable.fm Room is spinning right now. Come join us and spin your own gems or just listen along. It's awesome.
Note: Turntable just tweeted that their shutting down new sign ups today. Try again tomorrow or Monday.
