The Grand Poobah of third-party iOS Twitter clients is back for a fifth helping, even as the microblogging service continues its efforts to crack down on exactly how many customers it can serve.
As promised last week, The Iconfactory has announced the availability of Twitterrific 5, an all-new version of the longtime Twitter client for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Now a universal build, the app features an entirely new user interface -- but it comes with a cost.
The bad news is, if you've owned Twitterrific in the past, you'll have to pay all over again for version 5.0. This is likely due to the new API restrictions imposed by Twitter, which limits third-party client apps to only 100,000 users by default.
Understanding this, The Iconfactory is debuting Twitterrific 5.0 at a special launch price of $2.99, a 50 percent discount only available for a limited time. So what's new or unique about this version that would justify such a purchase? Pretty much everything!
Beyond the all-new UI, the app is optimized for smooth, fast performance with customizable theme control over its look and feel -- that includes dark or light themes, your choice of font and size, avatar size, line spacing and even brightness control.
Twitterrific 5.0 now implements the "pull to refresh" feature made popular by Tweetie, the third-party app that ultimately because the official Twitter client. However, Twitterrific doesn't support timeline streaming over Wi-Fi as so many other third-party clients do now.
Finally, Twitterrific 5.0 now syncs your timeline with the Mac version using either iCloud or TweetMarker, although the Mac version hasn't actually received the same significant update quite yet.
Twitterrific 5.0 is now available from the App Store for the limited-time price of $2.99 and requires iOS 5.0 or later.
