USB-IF Calls Out Palm for Hypocrisy
Posted 09/27/2009 at 2:17:46pm | by Arvind Srinivasan

Palm, whiners of the tech universe, got pwned by the USB Implementers Forum after complaining about iTunes blocking the Pre from syncing. If you haven’t been following the Palm vs. Apple drama, here’s a quick summary.

Palm: If you don’t like AT&T, we’ve invented the Palm Pre, which is like the iPhone, except sorta inferior. But wait! It syncs with iTunes.

Apple: Uh, no it doesn’t [releases update that blocks Pre syncing].

Palm: Er, wait for it...[releases Pre update] Yeah it does.

[repeat]

Presumably, Palm doesn’t like dedicating resources to fixing their hack every time Apple comes out with a .01 release of iTunes, so they complained to the USB-IF, saying that Apple was deliberately blocking third party USB devices, and manipulating USB Vendor IDs to do so (i.e. only allowing Apple’s). However, somewhere within their hackery, Palm actually masked their own vendor ID, making the Pre look like an old school iPod. Whoops, hypocrisy.

So, the USB-IF formally rebuked Palm, making the future of Pre/iTunes syncing fuzzy, at best.

So Palm's complaint is that Apple is doing something wrong to combat Palm doing something wrong. I wouldn't mind seeing iTunes open up a bit but Palm shouldn't be spoofing their device ID in order to connect to iTunes. That is wrong no matter how you look at it.
