Not only will Valve finally be revealing Defense of the Ancients 2 at Gamescom in Germany next month, but they will also be holding a DotA 2 tournament for the best DotA players in the world, with the winner taking home $1 million.
The original Defense of the Ancients began as a simple mod of Blizzard's Warcraft III, but quickly grew into a cult classic that was being played around the world. It's still today (nearly ten years later) a popular game in the competitive gaming circuit. The sequel has been highly anticipated for many years. The closest that fans have ever gotten to an official sequel though was Riot Games' highly praised free-to-play PC title League of Legends.
The wait will end at Gamescom in August though as Valve finally takes the wrapper off DotA 2 in an event they're calling The International. "The International is the first public DotA 2 event and will give the tens of millions of gamers playing DotA around the world their first look at the new game," said Gabe Newell, president and founder of Valve. "I have had the good fortune to watch the competitors as they prepare for the tournament, and the level of play is extraordinary."
We're really looking forward to getting a glimpse of the game in motion. We're especially excited given Valve's stalwart support of the Mac gaming platform. While little has been announced about the game, we can be relatively certain it will be available on OS X given Valve's recent track record.
