Docks are a great way to use bare 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch internal hard drives without requiring costly enclosures, and Vantec is about to make them friendly with mobile gadgets thanks to the power of Wi-Fi.
As noted by Engadget, Vantec has announced the NexStar Wi-Fi Hard Drive Dock, a USB 3.0-equipped dock which uses bare internal hard drives or SSDs in either laptop-friendly 2.5-inch or full-sized 3.5-inch sizes without the need for a drive enclosure.
What makes the latest NexStar unique is that it also comes equipped with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, which means it's capable of beaming content to UPnP-compatible streaming boxes or even iOS and Android devices.
Vantec is stepping up its game by releasing a free NexStar Wi-Fi app through both the App Store as well as Google Play, which will enable any iOS or Android device to watch movies or view other content stored on the drives inserted into the dock.
Unfortunately, Vantec lists the NexStar Wi-Fi Hard Drive Dock as "coming soon," but Engadget notes that it's expected by the end of the year, so head over to your favorite Vantec authorized e-tailer and wait for it to pop up on the radar.
