Verizon CEO Has Officially Asked Apple for iPhone

When it comes to speculation on when Apple’s iPhone might land on Verizon Wireless, the general consensus seems to be when, not if. Adding fuel to that fire is a new report that the head of Verizon has officially expressed interest in adding the device to its lineup.
The Associated Press is reporting that Verizon Wireless CEO Ivan Seidenberg has officially let Apple know that yes, they want the iPhone. The executive made the remark on Tuesday before the Council on Foreign Relations while referring to a recent Wall Street Journal report outlining Apple’s efforts on a version of the iPhone compatible with Verizon’s network.
AT&T has had the iPhone locked down tight since it debuted in June, 2007; their network uses the GSM standard which is the most widely used internationally, while rivals Verizon and Sprint use the older CDMA standard, which would require a device with a different radio.
In making his comments, Verizon CEO Seidenberg declined to reveal when -- or even if -- the iPhone will be coming to his company. He also gave no confirmation of The Wall Street Journal report detailing Apple’s CDMA plans.
Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Apple this Thursday as they give a preview of what’s coming with this year’s iPhone OS 4.0 update, which is expected to debut in June, likely with new hardware.
