It is believed that Motorola could release a new Droid device on Verizon come June 23. The new device, according to Engadget, could go head-to-head with the iPhone 4, which is set to launch just a day after this rumored device is to launch. No one is certain of the exact device rumored to be launched, but Engadget has a potential hands-on video.
Engadget claims to have their hands on the device in advance of any potential launch dates. They have been posting videos and hardware specs to their site. According to the gadget blog, the "Droid X" has a 4.4-inch screen with 854 x 480 resolution, an 8 megapixel camera with flash, and the ability to record 720p high definition video.
In the video (posted below), Engadget says the device feels very snappy, and on their blog, they note they believe the device has a 1GHz processer inside. On the hardware side, there's also an HDMI port, 4 physical buttons, a capacitive touchscreen, and 8GBs of on-board storage. On the software side of things, the device appears to be running Android 2.1 (Eclair).
Of course, the device doesn't include a front-facing camera or the ability to do FaceTime video chats like the iPhone 4 does, however, it's good to see another contender in the cell phone market for Verizon.
You can read more information about the speculated Droid device on PC Mag and Engadget.
My opinion is that just because the Droid CAN do those things doesn't mean that it's GOOD at ANY of those things. The Droid is truly a mess of a product, as I explain in my blog posting here: http://scottworldblog.wordpress.com/2010/03/12/iphone-vs-droid/
Interesting. It would appear that Verizon is countering the iPhone with the Droid X. It looks pretty cool. Big screen, 8MP camera, and quite a solid display. Resolution below that of the iPhone, but nonetheless, it would certainly make good competition with the iPhone 4.
