We heard the rumors that the VLC Media Player app would be coming to the iPhone soon after its welcome debut on the iPad -- and that day is finally here, and it’s a universal app to boot.
VLC Media Player got a welcome update on Monday, bringing the version number to 1.1.0. The biggest new feature is universal compatibility, allowing the same app to work on the iPad as it has been, as well as the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and “recent iPod touches.” (Developer APPLIDIUM doesn’t specify what those are, but we’re guessing all but the first-gen model.)
In addition to now being able to play your previously iOS-hostile media on your iPhone, you now have the ability to delete files from within the app itself, rather than having to return to iTunes (you’ll still have to add your media this way, however).
VLC users will also enjoy “much faster decoding thanks to assembly optimizations” as well as “many more extensions” now being recognized -- all of which means that VLC Media Player for iOS can play more files than ever before, bringing the app closer to its multi-platform, open-source desktop version.
