There are plenty of free iPhone apps capable of getting you cheap phone calls and text messages, but if you’re a user of the desktop application VoxOx, you’ll be particularly interested in hearing about the company’s latest offering.
CNet’s The Download Blog is reporting that VoxOx parent company Telcentris, Inc. has followed up their big desktop refresh from earlier this year with a new, free iPhone companion app called VoxOx Call. It may not be the full desktop VoxOx experience on your mobile phone, but judging from the early reviews, it’s more than enough to satisfy fans of that app.
“Users can intiate ‘callbacks’ from the iOS app to any other phone, both in North America and worldwide,” CNet explains. “VoxOx says that its rates are competitive with those offered by Skype and Google Voice, and sometimes cheaper. The callback feature lets you initiate a call from the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, then have it ring a different phone such as your office landline. Once you pick up that phone, it will automatically complete the call to whichever contact you chose to connect to.”
Low-cost SMS is also part of the equation -- text messages are free to receive and only “one or two pennies” to send, with the ability to email copies of your SMS transcripts. You can even view incoming faxes on your iPhone as well.
Unfortunately, the VoxOx Call app isn’t universal at the moment, but it’s good to know that it works on the iPad in 2x mode at any rate. A free VoxOx account is required to use VoxOx Call -- you can sign up right from your iOS device or online at the company’s website.
VoxOx Call 1.0.1 is now available from the App Store; the 1.7MB download is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 4.2 or later.
