What Apple Didn't (and Should've) Announced
Posted 09/10/2008 at 4:58:20pm | by Florence Ion

steve

Apple had a field day yesterday in San Francisco announcing a myriad of new iPod features, the new iTunes 8, and the much-rumored and highly anticipated (by the internet gossip chain) 4G iPod nano. However, there were several products and features that either remained unmentioned or were disregarded.

There was hope that iTunes would eventually offer a subscription service to offset the cost of pay-per-download, but that didn’t happen. AppleInsider reported that their “alleged sources” at CNET explained how Apple has only negotiated deals with record companies for pay-per-track and does not have the rights to offer bulk downloads.

For Apple enthusiasts with an iPhone and an iPod, it looks like you still have to carry both around while on runs. Nike+ is only compatible with the iPod nano and the iPod touch (2nd gen!), which makes us wonder: when will Apple release the feature for the iPhone? For consumers who don’t want to bother with the phone functionality and have purchased an iPod touch (2nd gen!), at least you’re in luck.

Steve Jobs also forgot to announce that there are four new colors joining the iPod shuffle family, including PRODUCT(RED), which is, as you can assume, a red-colored shuffle.

And finally, there is still anticipation for the “mystery product transition," Steve and CFO Peter Oppenheimer mentioned the profit-sucking transition during Apple's fiscal third-quarter conference call in July. Everyone is still curious what Apple has up it's sleeves. Will it be a DVR Apple TV? Sub-$500 notebooks? In-car stereo system that actually works correctly with the iPhone? It figures that Steve would leave us wanting more.

What do you wish Steve had announced? Drop your keynote disappointments in the comments below.

So Apple updates the entire iPod line, releases iTunes 8.0, announces HD TV shows (along with the return on NBC), announces a 2.1 software update for the iPod Touch and iPhone and still people are not satisfied.

There is no way possible for Apple to release everything everyone wants at once. There is always room for improvement and growth. That's life. Why focus on what's not there? Were Apple users slighted somehow? It seems to me we just got a plethora of goodies to drool over and play with.

avatarDon't hate....APPRECIATE!

I agree. Be happy with what was released. The features and Apple-branded dream gadgets that we all pine for are more than likely in the works. (or at least are being considered) Everything will be revealed in due time. Our speculations, expectations and anticipations are what make these Keynotes exciting!

avatarWell, it WAS an iPod event...

What did I miss? Not much really...

I can't say I'm disappointed about Apple introducing nothing but iPod stuff, that's what this event was all about. Everything that was dropped is just about all I would expect from Apple at this point. I wanted to see a 64GB Touch, but that wouldn't have fit Apple's current M.O. Genius may be great for most mainstream users, but it hasn't impressed me yet. After a couple of days, it has introduced me to exactly ONE song that I like that I hadn't heard of...

Mostly, I'm confused. Both the Classic and Nano seem to have taken steps backwards. The Classic's capacity confuses me, why would they do this? Wouldn't it have been easier to leave the the Classic at 160GB? OK, ditch the little one, but why step backwards in capacity? The Nano styling seems to have stepped back to being the next evolution from the 2ND gen Nano, kind of ignoring that the 3rd gen version had ever existed. Not that this is a bad thing, I think they look great. The silver Nano with the black scroll wheel looks great, I think all the colors should come with the black scroll wheel. At least they gave us 16GB this time.

avatarUpdated Mac Mini for the living room.

The next thing Apple should release: A much-updated Mac Mini designed specifically for the living room. More than just a PVR, it's a full-featured macintosh you can use while lounging around on your couch. Features include:

- Same small footprint as current Mac Mini.
- HDMI video out as well as DVI/VGA.
- Digital audio out.
- PVR/Apple TV software built-in.
- Wireless I/O device (combination keayboard & pointing device/mouse) that borrows heavily from the Nintendo Wii OR native support for the Wiimote.
- Huge freakin' hard drive.
- Enough RAM to run WoW at a decent framerate on a 50" television.
- Wireless USB hub so you can plug devices in at the couch. (Better yet, embed the hub INTO the couch).
- Updated preferences in OSX so the user has way more control over font sizes in menus, popups, dialog boxes, etc, etc...
