Now that the white iPhone 4 is finally on the streets, it can start to fade from legend into Apple history -- but not until the requisite teardown reveals any final secrets the ivory handset may hold deep inside.
AppleInsider is reporting that the white iPhone 4 has already been torn apart by the folks at MacOtakara, a Japanese Apple-centric blog that got their hands on one of the first units last week. Surprisingly, there are actually a few modest changes to the inside of the device, most notably a modified camera lens and proximity sensor.
“According to the report, which drew its information from various Twitter posts, the sensor remains the same, but the ‘magnitude of the incident light’ between the black and white iPhone 4 models is a different size,” AppleInsider notes. “Photo comparisons of the two devices seem to indicate that the rear-facing camera lens on the white iPhone 4 has been set farther back than its black counterpart.”
The image above shows a comparison of the white and black model iPhone 4 camera lens, revealing the subtle difference between the two. MacOtakara also noted a change to the internal proximity sensor on the white version, “though the exact nature of the change remains unclear.”

Apple’s own promotional images of the white iPhone 4 reveal that the outer hole for the proximity sensor is larger than on the black model. AppleInsider speculates that both changes were necessary to avoid light leakage, which is widely believed to be the major issue that delayed the white iPhone 4 for nearly 10 months.
And with that, the white iPhone 4 fades into Apple history as we look ahead to the iPhone 5 later this year…
