Hot on the heels of FaceTime for Mac's beta release, we have news that Redmond isn't far behind -- at least as far as its popular Messenger software is concerned. As of today, Mac users who prefer Microsoft's chat client (or those who have many PC friends who do), can now hop on board the video chatting bandwagon.
The announcement of the release came through the Windows Team Blog. Like FaceTime, Windows Messenger for Mac lets you communicate with your friends on their computer or their phone or through email. You sign in using your Windows Live ID and go from there. According to Microsoft's website, Messenger will even be integrated into your 2011 Office applications for document co-authoring communications. Outlook, we're told, will indicate whether your contacts are online or not.

We're not sure how many Mac users will be picking up this piece of software today, even though it is free to download. Later when Office 2011 hits the markets, it will be included as part of the overall package, so numbers may tick up at that stage. The question now is, can you make Messenger act as your security cam?
